Fall Online Learning Boosters

Our Learning Boosters are back! We asked many teachers (and checked studies!) to identify must-know topics that are often difficult for many middle-schoolers – and we’re offering programs to help. Our fall workshops in Math and Literacy each focus on one critical topic that helps students build the foundational knowledge they need for future learning in middle school, high school and even college.

If your child is currently learning one of these topics, or has learned it but is struggling with it, these workshops will help build their understanding and confidence.

And yes, these programs are free of cost to the students’ families!

  • Live, small-group sessions
  • Personalized attention
  • Taught by credentialed teachers & mentors
  • Focused workshops on critical concepts by grade
  • During after-school hours
  • No cost to families

Meemli is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing high-quality learning experiences and academic support free of cost to students who lack access to them. Our programs are personalized, live and remote, with teachers and mentors meeting the students where they are; students need only a device and an internet connection to participate. All programs are free of cost to families, thanks to generous donors.

Schedule at a glance

Each program runs once a week for six weeks, 4:30–5:15 pm PT. Thanksgiving week (Nov 23–27) is off. Every program meets on its own weekday, so students can attend both the Math and the ELA program for their grade.

  • Mondays Math: Fractions Foundations & Fluency Grades 5–6
  • Tuesdays Literacy: Writing Clear Strong Answers Grades 7–8
  • Wednesdays Literacy: Effective Reading Strategies Grades 5–6
  • Thursdays Math: Ratios & Proportional Reasoning Grades 7–8

How it works

  • Six weekly 45-minute sessions, scheduled after school
  • Small-group classes are on Zoom and the safe Meemli learning platform
  • Students can join from anywhere they are
  • Students need a computer, laptop or tablet with a decent internet connection and a current browser (we recommend Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge)

What makes it different

  • Small-group classes are led by credentialed teachers
  • Lessons are custom-created to help students stay engaged and enjoy learning
  • For every topic, students first build understanding through concept discussion, review and group exercises
  • Individual guidance from the teacher and mentors as needed

Programs offered

Programs are for students in grades 5–8 or equivalent.

Grades 5–6 · Math

Fractions Foundations & Fluency

Why this is important: Fractions trip up more middle schoolers than almost any other math topic, and once a student falls behind here, it’s hard to keep up in the algebra and higher-level math that follows. This workshop gives your child focused learning time to build real understanding of fractions, so they can handle it confidently.

Grades 7–8 · Math

Ratios & Proportional Reasoning

Why this is important: Ratios, rates, and proportions are the bridge between arithmetic and algebra. They show up everywhere from unit pricing to recipes to map scales. Students who are uncomfortable with proportional reasoning may struggle with algebra. This workshop gives your child focused, small-group time to build that comfort now.

Effective Reading Strategies

Why this is important: Understanding what you read is the foundation for every subject, and for answering reading comprehension questions well on tests and assignments. This program gives your child practical tips and techniques for better understanding what they read, so they can give stronger, better-supported answers.

Writing Clear Strong Answers

Why this is important: Clear writing is one of the most fundamental skills a student can build. It shows up on every test, in every subject, for the rest of school. This program gives your child focused guidance to build the skills of organizing and expressing ideas and writing clear, well-supported paragraphs for essays and answers to questions.
